SENECA ROCKS
This dazzling bunch includes some stellar figures, and will bring back the celebrated sound of the original Johnson Mountain Boys. Dudley Connell’s guitar and trademark vocal leads defined their appeal from 1978 to 1988, even then reviving and revitalizing the honesty and energy of bluegrass’s early years. Since 1995 Dudley has been a linchpin of the Seldom Scene, blending traditional and contemporary influences that extend the unique elements that Scene founder John Duffey brought us for twenty-five years. Sally Love, Dudley’s partner in music and in life, brings a great voice, solid musicianship and serious sensibilities of her own to Seneca Rocks.

David McLaughlin was a Johnson Mountain Boy in the late 70s and beyond, playing mandolin, singing harmony, and later becoming a sought-after instructor. A sudden and severe hearing loss in 2006 put a halt to his music until he discovered some advanced technology that has helped him regain much of his hearing. The supremely gifted Richard Underwood was the JMB’s first and most distinctive banjo player. He comes closer to Ralph Stanley’s 1950s sound than anyone we know.

Texas-born Marshall Wilborn has played bass with (yes!) the Johnson Mountain Boys, with his wife in the award-winning Lynn Morris Band, Longview, Jimmy Martin and Michael Cleveland, among others. He’s a fine singer too, with a unique east Texas accent that makes his voice among the most recognizable in bluegrass.

ERNIE EVANS AND THE FLORIDA STATE BLUEGRASS BAND
Ernie Evans is a celebrated bluegrass radio and internet host and, until recently, a featured soloist with Valerie Smith and Liberty Pike, playing mandolin, banjo or guitar as the music required. Ernie and Debi Evans bring their talented ensemble all the way from Jacksonville, on what they call the “first coast.” Isaac Taylor (banjo) and Lamont Goff (mandolin) round out the ensemble—and they’re both first rate musicians. A packed touring schedule has taken the band all the way through Canada and eastern United States this year, and their bookings extend all the way through 2012.

Everyone who enjoyed them at Fred’s last Friday will want to be on hand to see them again in Estero.

BUG TUSSLE RAMBLERS
Southwest Florida’s pre-eminent bluegrass band blends traditional style and songs with the inspirations that guide bluegrass today. Bob Shea’s guitar-assisted good humor and Karen Batten’s banjo virtuosity are matched by Doug Gerdon’s creative mandolin, Doug Yaehrling’s solid bass, and great singing from their four blended voices in varying combinations.

The Ramblers also double as hard working, unpaid members of the team that organizes and presents great events like this one, creating forums for resident and visiting performers, and ensuring that support for great music continues.

SAW GRASS DRIFTERS
Close trio vocal harmonies can enhance even the best country, bluegrass or gospel. When Mickie and Roli Scholl add daughter Sharon’s golden voice or Dan O’Connell’s tasteful baritone to a hurtin’ country heart song, you’ll remember what the music’s really all about and come back for more. Resophonic Roli triples on Dobro, mandolin and lead guitar to add instrumental variety.

BEAN PICKERS
As the name suggests, the Pickers keep their music close to the ground, blending informal home-grown vocal harmony with Linda Kallinger’s versatile fiddling, Leslie Weidenhammer’s supportive electric bass, and Scott Ritter’s flat-picked electric and acoustic guitars. Pop, country, western and bluegrass tunes all fit into their extensive song bag, and each Picker has special songs of her/his own that have keep their audiences coming back for more.

ANDY WAHLBERG Andy Wahlberg and harp guitar
Most of us don’t know what a harp guitar is, but that doesn’t apply to us Southwest Floridians who’ve enjoyed the sophisticated music and wicked wit of Andy Wahlberg for years. Andy’s instrument of choice is an exotic hybrid that looks like a cross between a musical instrument and a turkey drumstick. He’s written some great music to go with it and has a broad repertoire besides.

SKEETERLAND BAND
Skeeterland travels all the way from Pine Island to Cracklin’ Jack’s in east Naples every Friday night to deliver high energy bluegrass, country and gospel music to accompany catfish, ribs and other great down home Florida specialties on the menu. Silvia, Doug, Pete and Ed are some of the friendliest people around. They support bluegrass with their hearts and souls, and their devotion to good music and good entertainment never flags.

LAZY B PICKERS
When Lazy B founder Joyce Beecroft arrives from eastern Canada each fall, good music and good times begin. She's long been a supporter, performer and promoter of great old time music, and good musicians gather around her to enjoy the energy and artistry she radiates.

CAPTAIN JOE AND
THE BOTTOM FEEDERS
Joe McNichols navigates a fishing boat through south Florida’s coastal waters in search of evening meals for visiting tourists. On land he’s known as one of the area’s best singers and flat-pickers for miles around.. His local music classes attract young, mature and aspiring bluegrass stylists, and the best of them make superior music with the Bottom Feeders, whose name really should be Prize Catch, since they include Sharon and Pat Morrison, Banjo Larry Wicker and Annie Hubber, whose classic country voice is guaranteed to astound and astonish.
